Hello, my name is Maya Gibbes. I love to learn and I constantly pursue novel information about science and social issues. I have many hobbies, none of which I am an expert at, but all of which I love. I am passionate about social justice and animal rights issues, and I know that my life’s work will be centered on using science to enlighten others and instill a sense of meaning in their lives. I hate the taste of bell peppers. I am also a certified Emergency Medical Technician. I am currently pursuing a School Psychology M.S. degree that I hope will help to open up the doors to my professional life and allow me to continue to pursue human and animal rights activities.

I am proud of the fact that I come from a large family of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds. I have also lived in Trinidad and Tobago, which I think is unique compared to most Rhode Island residents. At age 11 I was diagnosed with a uncommon bone disorder called Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, caused by being overweight, that I have since had surgery to fix. In 2011 I earned a spot as a William Dement Fellow at Bradley Hospital Sleep lab. This was an internship under the direction of one of the most well known scientists researching adolescent sleep deprivation, Mary Carskadon. This internship helped me to realize that I want to spread knowledge about the world and science to help others live a more healthy, happy and fulfilling life. I believe that these life experiences in particular have opened my mind to human and environmental issues.

7/28/14 Edit, End of Class Mini-Reflection:

A short bit on how EDC 503 changed my mind. I will remember this class because it inspired me to enjoy learning again. It reminded me that I should do my best work. I used to think that just knowing was enough, but now I know that the really important stuff comes from what you do with what you know. Quality education means changing the way that you thought before based on new information and having the ability to use that information in the future. Thanks for a quality education! JF: Your renewed vision of learning sounds exciting and fun. Congrats.
